If you use a grinder with a bottom chamber, you've probably noticed a fine, golden-green powder building up under the screen. That powder is kief, and it's one of the most potent parts of the cannabis plant.
Many people leave it sitting in the grinder for months without realizing what it is. Others know about it but aren't sure how to collect it or what to do with it.
In this article, we'll explain what kief is, why it's stronger than flower, how to use it, and how to collect more of it with the right grinder.
What Is Kief?
Kief is the powder made of trichomes that have broken off cannabis flower. Trichomes are the tiny, sticky resin glands that cover buds and give them their frosty look.
Trichomes produce most of the plant's cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, along with the terpenes responsible for aroma and flavour. When flower is handled, broken up or ground, some of these trichomes detach. Collected together, they form kief.
Kief is also the starting material for traditional hash. Hash is made by pressing large amounts of kief into a solid block with heat and pressure.
How Strong Is Kief?
Because kief is made mostly of trichomes, it contains much more THC by weight than flower. Kief is commonly reported to range from around 50% to 70% THC or more, depending on the strain and how much plant material is mixed in. By comparison, most flower tests somewhere between 15% and 30%.
The colour gives you a rough idea of purity. Light, golden kief usually contains fewer plant particles than darker green kief, which tends to include small bits of leaf and bud.
That potency means a small amount goes a long way. Health Canada lists kief among the high-THC products that new and occasional consumers should approach with caution. If you haven't used kief before, start with a light sprinkle and see how it feels before adding more.
How Kief Collects in Your Grinder
A standard two-piece grinder has a lid and a single chamber with teeth. Ground flower and loose trichomes end up mixed together, so any kief simply gets smoked with the flower.
Grinders with a kief catcher add a fine mesh screen between the grinding chamber and an extra compartment at the bottom. As you grind and handle the grinder, small trichomes fall through the screen and collect underneath, while the ground flower stays above it.
These grinders go by two names, which can be confusing when you're shopping:
-
Three-chamber grinder counts the three compartments: grinding, flower collection and kief collection.
-
Four-piece grinder counts the physical parts: the lid plus three sections.
Both names describe the same design.
Kief builds up slowly. Depending on how much you grind and how resinous your flower is, it can take a few weeks before there's enough to use.
How to Use Kief
You can use kief on its own, but most people add it to something else.
Top a Bowl
Sprinkling kief on top of ground flower in a pipe or bong is the most common way to use it. This is often called crowning a bowl. Add the kief on top of the flower rather than directly on the screen, where it can fall through or melt into the bowl.
Add It to a Joint
You can mix a pinch of kief evenly into the ground flower before rolling. Spread it through the joint rather than leaving it in one clump. Concentrated kief can burn unevenly or make one section of the joint much stronger than the rest.
Make Edibles
Kief works well in homemade edibles because it contains less plant material than flower, so it affects the flavour less. Like flower, it needs to be decarboxylated first, which uses heat to convert THCA into active THC. You can then infuse it into butter or oil the same way you would when making cannabutter.
Because kief is much stronger than flower, use less of it and start with a small serving. Homemade edibles are hard to dose accurately, and their effects can take up to 4 hours to fully set in.
Press It Into Hash
With enough kief, you can press it into a small piece of hash. Wrap the kief in parchment paper, apply gentle warmth, such as a warm bottle of water, and press firmly. This takes practice, and it only makes sense once you've collected a good amount.
How to Collect and Store Kief
A few habits help you collect more kief without damaging your grinder.
-
Use the tool that came with it. Most kief-catcher grinders include a small plastic scraper. Plastic is less likely to damage the screen or scratch metal than a knife or key.
-
Chill the grinder first. Putting the grinder in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes makes trichomes more brittle, so more of them fall through the screen when you shake it.
-
Tap, don't scrape the screen. Pressing hard on the mesh can tear it. Gentle taps on the side of the grinder move kief through without stressing the screen.
-
Store it airtight. Keep collected kief in a small glass jar or airtight container in a cool, dark place. Heat and light break down THC and terpenes over time.
-
Clean the screen occasionally. Resin can clog the mesh. Soaking the screen in isopropyl alcohol, then rinsing and drying it fully, restores airflow.
Is a Kief-Catcher Grinder Worth It?
If you grind flower regularly, yes. A grinder with a kief catcher collects trichomes that would otherwise stick to the grinder walls or get smoked unevenly with the rest of your flower.
Over time, that adds up to a small supply of high-potency kief from cannabis you already bought. It also gives you more control over how you use it, whether that means a stronger bowl, homemade edibles or a small piece of hash.
When choosing one, look for:
-
Aluminum construction. It's durable and easy to clean.
-
Sharp, diamond-shaped teeth. They cut flower cleanly, which helps trichomes separate.
-
A fine, sturdy screen. A finer mesh collects purer kief with less plant material.
-
A size that fits your use. Pocket grinders work for occasional use, while larger grinders save time if you grind often.
Getting Started With Kief
Kief is easy to collect once you have the right grinder, and it gives you more ways to use your flower. Start with small amounts, especially if you're new to stronger cannabis products, and store it properly so it keeps its potency.
If you're looking to upgrade your setup, you can browse grinders and other cannabis accessories and add them to your next flower order.
