Buying a quarter pound with a few friends is one of the easiest ways to lower what everyone pays per gram. Wholesale tiers are priced well below single ounces, and splitting one order means nobody has to buy more than they'll actually use.
The tricky part is making the split fair. Someone has to place the order, everyone has to pay the right amount, and the weed has to be divided evenly, especially if the order includes more than one strain.
This article covers how many grams are in a QP, how to work out each person's share and cost, how to handle mixed-strain orders and payments, and what Ontario's possession rules mean for a group buy.
How Much Is in a QP?
A QP, or quarter pound, is 4 ounces, which cannabis menus count as 112 grams. Some wholesale listings also include a bonus ounce with a QP, which brings the total to 140 grams.
Here's how those weights divide across a typical group:
|

56 g each |
70 g each |

46.7 g each |

A four-way QP split is the most common because it gives everyone exactly one ounce. It also keeps each share under Ontario's 30 g public possession limit, which matters if people will carry their share home (more on that below).
How to Work Out Each Person's Cost
Start with the price per gram, then multiply by each person's share:
Total price ÷ total grams = price per gram
Price per gram × grams per person = cost per person
For example, Super Skittles is currently listed at $350 for a QP with a bonus ounce. That's $350 ÷ 140 g, or $2.50 per gram. Split four ways, each person gets 35 g for $87.50. Split five ways, each person gets 28 g for $70.
For comparison, the same strain's single ounce is $95, which works out to about $3.39 per gram. Buying the QP together saves each person roughly a quarter of the cost. The same price-per-gram calculation works for comparing any two listings.
If the order includes a shipping charge, add it to the total before you divide. That way the fee is shared in proportion to what each person receives.
Splitting a Mixed-Strain Order
Many groups don't want one strain for everyone. Wholesale and mix-and-match orders let you combine strains while keeping tier pricing on the total weight. There are two fair ways to divide them.
Everyone gets an equal share of each strain. If you order two ounces each of two strains and split four ways, each person gets 14 g of each. This is the simplest option, and everyone pays the same amount.
Each person chooses their strain. If people want different strains, calculate the price per gram for each strain separately, then charge each person for the grams they take. For example, if one strain costs $3.00 per gram and another costs $3.50 per gram, someone taking 14 g of each pays $42 + $49, or $91.
If the order is a single bundle with one flat price, every gram costs the same regardless of strain. In that case, divide the cost by weight and let people agree on who takes which strain.
Who Pays and When
One person usually places the order, but they shouldn't have to cover everyone's share and wait to be paid back. The fairest approach is to collect every share before the order is placed.
-
Agree on the order first. Confirm the strains, weights and total cost in a group chat, so everyone sees the same numbers.
-
Collect payment upfront. Ask everyone to send their share, by e-transfer for example, before the organizer orders.
-
Charge cost only. The organizer should pass on the exact price, including any shipping, with nothing added for themselves.
-
Keep a simple record. Write down each person's name, strain, grams and amount paid. It takes two minutes and prevents most disagreements.
-
Agree on what happens if plans change. Decide in advance whether someone who backs out after the order is placed still owes their share, and what happens if a parcel is delayed.
Tracked orders usually arrive within 2 to 3 business days in Toronto and the GTA, and the shipping information page explains what to do if a parcel is late.
How to Divide the Order Evenly
Weighing is the only reliable way to split cannabis fairly. Dividing by eye almost always leaves someone short.
-
Use a digital scale. A pocket scale that measures to 0.1 g is accurate enough for splitting ounces.
-
Weigh the whole order first. Confirm the total weight before you start. If it's slightly over or under, divide the difference evenly.
-
Tare each container. Zero the scale with an empty bag or jar on it, so you're weighing only the cannabis.
-
Mix bud sizes. Give each share a similar mix of large buds and smaller pieces, rather than letting one person end up with most of the shake.
-
Divide it together. Weighing with the group present, or on a video call, removes any doubt about the split.
Store each share in an airtight container once it's divided. Large orders take longer to use, and humidity packs help keep flower from drying out over that time.
The Legal Limits to Keep in Mind
Under the federal Cannabis Act, adults can share up to 30 g of dried cannabis with other adults of legal age, but they can't sell cannabis without a licence. In Ontario, everyone involved must be 19 or older.
A few rules affect group buys directly:
-
Keep each share at or under 30 g if it will be carried in public. Ontario limits public possession to 30 g of dried cannabis. A four-way QP split works well; larger shares should stay at home until they can be collected in smaller amounts.
-
Don't mark up the price. Charging more than cost is selling, not sharing.
-
Keep it within the group. Selling portions to people outside the original group is illegal.
-
Never include anyone under 19. Sharing with minors is illegal, even in a private home.
Planning Your Group Order
A group buy works best when everyone agrees on the numbers before anything is ordered. Work out the price per gram, decide how mixed strains will be divided, collect each share upfront, and weigh everything when it arrives.
If your group is ready to compare options, the wholesale weed menu lists QP, half-pound and pound pricing for each strain, so you can calculate everyone's share before you order.
